Passione Vintage

Sono una che divora Balzac o Queneau, non una che legge dei romanzi piuttosto femminili, e non sapevo cosa aspettarmi quando ho ricevuto la bozza di Passione Vintage di Isabel Wolff che esce oggi in Italia. Questo romanzo segue le avventure di Phoebe, una 34enne londinese che ha appena aperto una boutique di vintage. Phoebe ha una regola riguardo all'acquisto dei lotti di vestiti dai privati: non rimanere da loro più di un'ora. Regola che infrange dal primo appuntamento, dalla signora Bell, una francese condannata da un cancro, che tiene nell'armadio da quasi 70 anni un cappotto da bambina azzurro legato ad un terribile segreto.

Se il romanzo ci trasporta nella Francia occupata del 1942, ci fa anche penetrare nell'atmosfera affascinante della boutique Village Vintage fra abiti da té degli anni 20, bustier di Vivienne Westwood e abito da sera in seta blu Balenciaga del 60. Là si incrociano clienti, amici, spasimanti e anche la mamma di Phoebe, che odia il vintage quasi quanto le sue rughe, che conta di sconfiggere grazie a qualche trattamento improbabile quanto costoso.

Il romanzo non gioca sulla nostalgia, sul “era meglio una volta”, ma è comunque questione del tempo che passa. Oggetti carichi di storia, racconti di persone anziane, bisogno di fare pace con il proprio passato per poter andare avanti, Isabell Wolff ci fa amare la vita così com'è, ricca, complessa ed appassionante, carica di ricordi e di progetti, marcata dalle rughe, dai primi capelli grigi e dai piccoli difetti che abbiamo tutti. Quando Phoebe dichiara a proposito di un dramma: “vorrei tanto che non fosse mai successo”, la sua amica risponde: “ma questo è come dire che vorresti che la vita non fosse mai successa. E' la vita questo”.

Happy birthday Bob Dylan!

70 years old, nothing less! And to say happy birthday, I wear a Woodstock t-shirt by Impure in order to make him remember that he hasn’t been to Woodstock (in those times he quietly stayed at home). Well, if he gets angry I will say him: me too I haven’t been there, Bob, I wasn't born yet!

Today these young people in the photo on the T-shirt nearly have Bob's age. I like to imagine they have still the same joy, and sometimes they remember the festival with emotion and they tell it to theirs first nephews (who are too young to understand, but that doesn’t matter).

70 anni, niente meno! E dire che per fargli gli auguri, indosso una t-shirt Woodstock Impure per ricordargli che a Woodstock non c'era (all'epoca se ne stava a casa per fatti suoi). Vabbé se si arrabbia gli dirò: neanch'io c'ero Bob, non ero ancora nata!

Questi giovani in foto sulla maglietta oggi hanno quasi l'età di Bob. Mi piace pensare che hanno ancora questa stessa gioia, e che a volte ricordano il festival con emozione e lo raccontano a loro primi nipotini (che non hanno ancora l'età di capire, ma non è grave).

Does it happen to you that you absolutely want something of which you have heard about or that you have simply imagined, and you do not know where to look for it?

My closet is full of little black dresses: with polka dots, laces, leather, with a white collar, with daisies, one for the beach, one for the evening, one that my sister has stolen, but some months ago I have decided that the perfect little black dress for the spring is the butterflies dress!

I looked for it, did not find it, I abandoned the searches, and eventually I ended up on the site Magazzini del Sale. Now I want the white one, which is much more spring-like!

Vi capita di decidere che volete assolutamente una cosa di cui avete sentito parlare o che avete semplicemente immaginato, e non sapete dove cercarla?

Il mio armadio è pieno di tubini neri: a pois, di pizzo, di pelle, con un colletto bianco, con delle margherite, uno per la spiaggia, uno da sera, uno che mi ha rubato mia sorella, ma qualche mese fa mi sono messa in testa che il tubino nero perfetto per la primavera è l'abito con le farfalle!

Cercato, non trovato, abbandonate le ricerche, finita sopra per caso sul sito Magazzini del Sale. Ora lo vorrei anche in bianco che è ancora più primaverile!

It is not easy to choose a cloth when, as I do, one loves bows and collars, but feels like a woman and doesn't suffer the syndrome of Peter Pan. Next winter with the 40s' fashion I should be happy, because structured cuts + thick fabrics + true femmininity = I'll find what I'm looking for. In order to illustrate my purposes, take next winter’s Veronica Spadaro's collection: black, white, gray, cream, and winter fabrics (Veronica Spadaro's tweed! Thanks to her, I’ll not be jealous anymore of Mr del delitto's Zegna suits) With this, we can dare great bows, collars, beautifulst buttons, and I imagine myself living in a film with all these garments (Veronica is costumier for the cinema). But if you already feel like in foggy Parisian night with a beautiful man wearing a hat, look more closely at the clothes: oh surprise! The details are totally 2012, well yes it is possible to be inspired to the past and innovate anyway!

Non è facile scegliere un vestito quando, come me, si amano i fiocchi, i colletti, i plissettati, ma ci si sente perfettamente donna e non si soffre del sindrome di Peter Pan. Il prossimo inverno con la moda degli anni 40 dovrei essere contenta, perché tagli strutturati + tessuti spessi + femminilità vera = troverò ciò che cerco. Per illustrare i miei propositi, prendete la collezione Veronica Spadaro del prossimo inverno: nero, bianco, grigio, crema, e dei tessuti invernali (il tweed di Veronica Spadaro! Grazie a lei non sono più gelosa dei completi Zegna del signore del delitto!) Con questo, si possono osare i grandi fiocchi, i colletti, i bellissimi bottoni, e mi vedo bene vivere in un film con tutti questi vestiti (appunto Veronica lavora anche ai costumi per il cinema). Ma se vi sentite già in una Parigi nebbiosa uscendo di sera con un bell’uomo che porta un cappello, guardate i vestiti più da vicino: oh sorpresa! I dettagli sono totalmente 2012, eh sì è possibile ispirarsi ad un epoca ed innovare!

La robe de Fiorella

I don't know how I did, but here I am at a festival with a dress that was originally created for another festival.

The festival where I am: the festival of Hyères (Eudoxie's room, we were bored of taking photos in beautiful places and we said to ourselves: let's take photos in front of the room's door just for a change!)

The festival for which this dress had been made: the Summer Jamboree, “the most important international festival of American music and culture of the 40s and the 50s in Europe and second in the world” (says Wiki) in Senigallia WHERE I NEVER HAVE BEEN because in August I'm very rarely in Italy.

The photographer: Eudoxie, who can design but can take photos too (merci!)

The taylor: Fiorella (do you remember her cape?) who lives near Senigallia and created the dress for the festival (but then I arrived and I adored the cut, the association of the rose with the yellow, the pockets, and I bought it)

Fiorella's showroom in Milan: via Bligny 29, in a pretty apartment. But she is also in Jesi in via Ancona 16.

Non so come ho fatto, ma eccomi ad un festival con un abito che in origine era stato creato per un altro festival.

Il festival dove sono: quello di Hyères (camera di albergo di Eudoxie, eravamo stufe di fare delle foto in posti troppo belli e ci siamo dette: beh facciamo delle foto davanti alla porta della camera per cambiare!)

Il festival per il quale era stato fatto l'abito: il Summer Jamboree, “il più importante festival internazionale di musica e cultura dell'America degli anni '40 e cinquanta in Europa e secondo al mondo” (dice Wiki) a Senigallia DOVE NON SONO MAI STATA perché in agosto sono raramente in Italia.

La fotografa: Eudoxie, che sa disegnare ma anche fare delle foto (merci!)

La sarta: Fiorella (ricordate la sua cappa?) che vive vicino a Senigallia e ha creato il vestito apposta per il festival (ma poi sono arrivata io e ho adorato il taglio, l'associazione del rosa col giallo, le tasche, e me lo sono portata via)

Lo showroom di Fiorella a Milano: via Bligny 29, in un appartamento molto carino. Ma è anche a Jesi in via Ancona 16.

Hyères 2011: - les stylistes

Fashion should be a pleasant thing that puts a bit of joy in your life. In the morning, choosing a polka dots dress makes you in a good mood, makes you pass a polka dots day. That is the reason why I find the fashion world so strange, that on the head side is funny and colored, a bit crazy, but on the tail side is tense, pretencious, gossipy. I think that is why I have appreciated the Hyères festival a lot: it seemed to me that here, there was only the head side of fashion, while the tail side remained in Paris for the week end. Everybody is beautiful, everybody is kind in Hyères!
And so in a good spirit I discovered the ten selected designers' collections. First at the villa Noailles, where we could touch the clothes and chat with the designers. Then to the exhibition Yann Gross (who won last years photography jury prize), of which I publish the photos here. And at the end, the fashion show, close to the beach.
These photos are formidable, aren't they? Original, enigmatic, funny, they are fashionable photos as I like! Above, the French Léa Peckre's work, who won Jury Prize*.

La moda dovrebbe essere una cosa simpatica che mette un po' di allegria nella vita. La mattina, scegliere un vestito a pois vi mette di buon umore, vi fa passare una giornata a pois. E' per questa ragione che trovo così strano il mondo della moda, che dal lato testa è divertente e colorato, un po' folle, ma lato croce si rivela teso, sufficiente, pettegolo. Credo sia per questo che ho così tanto apprezzato il festival di Hyères: mi è sembrato che là, ci fosse solo il lato testa della moda, mentre il lato croce fosse rimasto a Parigi per il week end. Tutti quanti sono belli, tutti quanti sono gentili a Hyères!
E così con buonumore ho scoperto le collezioni dei dieci stilisti selezionati. Prima alla villa Noailles, dove si potevano toccare i vestiti chiacchierando con gli stilisti. Poi alla mostra Yann Gross (che ha vinto il Premio della Giuria Fotografia l'anno scorso), di cui pubblico qui le foto. E alla fine alla sfilata, a due passi della spiaggia.
Non trovate queste foto formidabili? Originali, enigmatiche, buffe a modo loro, delle foto di moda come piacciono a me! Qui sopra, il lavoro della francese Léa Peckre, che ha vinto il Premio della Giuria* (ha fatto un lavoro incredibile).

Le Festival de Hyères 2011

“Le Festival International de Mode et Photographie de Hyères” is an incredible event. It takes place in the villa Noailles, an enooormous mansion designed in the Twenties by Mallet-Stevens, which Eudoxie and me intend to buy as soon as possible (we dream to have a room for friends in the open air and a squash room).
There is the garden, where today the fashionists sun-bath, but at the time when the beautiful, rich and avant-gardists Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles were the owners, there were Dali, Picasso, and Buñuel coming to spend their holidays here.

Il festival di moda e fotografia di Hyères è una cosa assolutamente incredibile. Si svolge alla villa Noailles, un'enooorme villa concepita negli anni 20 da Mallet-Stevens che Eudoxie ed io contiamo comprare al più presto (sogniamo di una camera degli ospiti all'aria aperta - sì, una camera senza tetto per l'estate - e una sala da squash.
Sopra, il giardino (insomma uno dei giardini), dove oggi i modaioli prendono il sole, ma all'epoca dei belli, ricchi e avanguardisti proprietari Charles e Marie-Laure de Noailles, erano Dali, Picasso e Buñuel a venire a passare le vacanze là.

The house, a labyrinth. It's cosy, the atmosphere is relaxed. The festival is open and you meet both super-fashion parisians and people coming from around here.

La casa, un labirinto. E' accogliente, l'atmosfera è rilassata. Il festival è aperto a tutti, e si incrociano sia parigini super fashion che gente del posto venuta in famiglia.

At the festival, red lipstick is fashionable! Still better on a clear skin. Here is Eudoxie (+ someone with no face).

Al festival, la grande moda è il rossetto super rosso! Ancora meglio su una pelle chiara. Qui Eudoxie (+ qualcuno senza viso).

Picasso disegnava sui muri della villa nel suo tempo libero! Mi piace questa foto, con Eudoxie che fa la foto da turista da una parte e una signora che telefona appoggiata contro il muro come se niente fosse dall'altra.

The festival is also a contest: 10 young designers, 10 photographers, an hight level, but I'll speak about it again tomorrow.

Il festival è anche un concorso: 10 giovani stilisti, 10 fotografi, un livello elevato, ma ve ne riparlerò domani.

But the festival is also the occasion to visit Hyères and to spend a couple of hours drinking a glass and chatting with Eudoxie (and her man, to whom I owe some pictures in this post).

Ma il festival è anche l'occasione di andarsene in giro per le viuzze di Hyères e stare due ore davanti ad un bicchiere a chiacchierare con Eudoxie (e il suo uomo, al quale devo diverse fotografie di questo post).
